MV Ben My Chree – Isle Of Man

Synopsis

In March 2023, Steam Packet Company Ltd chose Thortech International to complete repair works to ship decks measuring almost 2000m² on the MV Ben My Chree ship. This ship was launched in April 1998, it is undoubtably one of the most reliable vessels in the Steam Packet Company’s history and it can hold the capacity of 275 cars which is up to 666 passengers. Our heavy-duty resin system THORGRIP STS^TM was carefully chosen for the ship decks surface by The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company due to its unbeatable anti-skid properties and long service life. Thortech also used their sustainable product THORPRIME™ STS underlaying the THORGRIP™ STS.

Process

As this project was to repair the ship decks, all existing anti-skid surfacing needed to be removed and this was done by a bobcat with a scraper attachment. Enclosed shot-blasting and handheld grinder work was carried out on the current surface to an SA2.5 standard to prepare the steel deck for the new anti-skid system to be put in place.  Before the initial installation started the surface had to be wiped down with a solvent wipe to remove any contaminants. After all preparation works had been completed, Thortech moved on to the process of laying the new anti-skid system to the deck. THORPRIME™ STS and THORGRIP™ STS was installed by Thortech’s specialist team. After so, the gelled over THORGRIP surface was generously coated with the chosen 1-3mm Emery aggregate.

Outcome

The client was delighted with the finished result, work was successfully carried out within time constraints and on budget. The THORGRIP STS^TM system is designed with longevity in mind.  When applied correctly with THORTECH’s range of strong aggregates, the THORGRIP STS^TM surface will last for years, thus preventing the requirement for regular maintenance.  Accompanied with rust prevention and fire-retardant properties, the THORGRIP STS^TM anti-skid system provides a long-life surface coating which meets the challenges of heavy duty cargo operations.
