Dublin Port – Irish Ferries, Stena Line & P&O Ferries
Synopsis
In 2023, Dublin Port approached Thortech International with the opportunity to carry out repairs to multiple ramps. Repairs were carried out on Ramp No.1 (Stena Line) measuring 220m², Ramp No.5 with the area of 500m² & 9 measuring 450m² (Irish Ferries) and Ramp No. 8 with the area of 200m² (P&O Ferries. Dublin Port wanted a dependable anti-slip resin product to be laid on the ferry ramps so that little maintenance work would need to be done. The award winning Thorgrip™ STS and Thorprime™ STS was chosen by Dublin Port as they found it to be the most reliable product for the outcome that was desired.
Process of Stena Line
Thortech International supplied and applied their 3-part anti-slip resin system, THORPRIME™, THORGRIP™ & Emery aggregate (1-3mm). Before the application process began, the 220m² concrete pads were prepared by enclosed shot blasting. When this was complete, Thortech’s Epoxy Primer (Thorprime™ STS) was applied to the surface using a roller. When the primer had set, Thorgrip™ STS was applied with 3-5mm Emery aggregate layered on top of this. Thortech’s team completed the concrete pads in two halves to ensure no closures of the linkspan so there would be no interruptions to any shipping schedules.
Process of Irish Ferries
To reduce disruptions to the use of the ramps, Thortech’ specialist team efficiently completed the works in separate lanes. Ramp 9 (450m²) was completed in 3 lanes to maintain ferry operations. Ramp 5 (500m²) was completed in 4 lanes to ensure uninterrupted loading and unloading of vessels. First, the surface of both ramp 5 and 9 was prepared for any product application. This process started with the removal of the old surface of the ramp by using a ride on scraper machine, this exposed the original steel ramp. Then, the exposed steel ramp was prepared by carrying out enclosed shot-blasting. Following the surface preparation, the steel was primed using Thorprime™. After the primer dried, the application of the Thorgrip™ 3-part resin system could go ahead and 3-5mm Emery was generously overlaid.
