Exeter Footbridge

Overview

Exeter Foot and Cycle bridge over the A379 between Chudleigh Road and the Devon Hotel at Matford was a £55.1 million project. It was lifted into place May 2023. It’s effectively an ‘urban extension’ to Exeter between Alphington and Exminster. This spectacular permanent landmark provides a dedicated crossing of the road. It’s intended to link 2,500 new homes and a school to local amenities in South West Exeter. The new bridge opens plenty of job opportunities to the public as it also formed a link to 21.5 hectares of land for new employment.

Process

Thortech International were rewarded with this project by SH Structures in the summer of 2023 as they were looking for a long-lasting, strong and reliable anti-slip product to be laid over the existing metal surface. Thortech first attentively installed Thorprime™ STS to prepare the 160m² area. When the Thorprime™ STS set, Thorgrip™ HD was considerately installed over this primed area. The chosen aggregate was 1-3mm Emery, this completely covered the whole area of the gelled surface.

Outcome

All work accomplished by Thortech International was finalized before the deadline and within the budget. Regular maintenance shall not be required due to the well-grounded, strong Emery aggregate along with the authentic Thortech products (Thorprime™ and Thorgrip™). Accompanied with rust prevention and fire-retardant properties, the anti-skid system provides a long-life surface coating which meets the challenges of a popular bridge. The client was delighted with the complete project and the bridge was pridefully opened to the public in January 2024.
