Llandough Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis, Cardiff

Synopsis

Thortech International Ltd were proud to be appointed by 2D Construction Ltd in February 2024 to complete the re- surfacing of pathways at the Cystic Fibrosis Centre at University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff. This is the only adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre in Wales, it’s a well-established place for those with Cystic Fibrosis to relax around new, pretty sceneries during their treatment periods. The CF Centre was funded £4.7million to be re-developed and expanded back in 2019. The Centre passionately cares for approximately 300 patients to help them achieve the best quality of life.

Process

Thortech International carefully applied the THORSET™ resin aggregate colours, Polarois and Moonshadow to the surface of the pathway along with a stunning ‘Celtic Knot’ to achieve the clients desired outcome. Our client thoughtfully chose a Celtic knot to be imprinted in the pathway to symbolize the eternity of life to their patients. Thortech’s team started with preparing the surface for the resin application. First, they removed the old manhole covers and dug out the original gravel surface with a 1.5 tonne digger. After that, the manhole covers were installed, areas were sprayed with weed killer and the membrane was installed. Next, type 1 stone was installed at 150mm which was 76mm from the finished level and compressed and open grade tarmac was installed on top of the type 1 compressed stone at 10mm which was 16mm from the finished level ready for THORSET™ resin bound surfacing installation. Our team then mixed the THORSET™ resin bound colours and consciously applied the THORSET™ resin bound mix to the surface, spread the mixture to 18mm using a screed puller and a rake ready to compress and finish by a hand trowel. For the final step our team added anti-slip gem glass to the new THORSET™ resin bound surface and allowed it to cure.

Our client was astonished with the result of our works, they were delighted with the quality of THORSET™ resin bound surface as well as Thortech Internationals dedication, professionalism, and overall service. The Cystic Fibrosis Centre now has a stunning and meaningful pathway for all their patients, staff and visitors to use.
